چکیده

Greetings from the Department of Molecular and Integrative Physiology (MIP). Phil Best resigned the MIP headship to take a position as associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (interrupted briefly by a tenure as interim dean) and I was appointed head of MIP in December, 2007. Phil guided the department for ten years during the interesting period following the reorganization of Biology into the Schools of Integrative Biology and Molecular & Cellular Biology, and so in many ways was following an uncharted path. About 40% of the present faculty members were recruited during his tenure, and the high quality and vitality of the department are a testament to his strong leadership. He remains an integral part of MIP, continues to teach physiology in the College of Medicine, and provides us valuable advice and assistance from the LAS Dean’s office. We are grateful for his outstanding contributions to MIP. With this newsletter, instead of the typical “newspaper reporter” style, we are experimenting with first person articles from members of MIP about their research. In this issue, we have articles from a new faculty member in her third year, Lori Raetzman; the established faculty Benita Katzenellenbogen and Al Feng; and an affiliate in MIP from the Department of Chemistry, Jonathan Sweedler. We also have an article by Milan Bagchi describing a major accomplishment this year, the new national Center for Research in Reproduction and Infertility. We plan to have an annual Fall newsletter (a little late this year) which will be complemented by a newsletter from the School of Molecular and Cellular Biology in the Spring. We hope you enjoy hearing from us. We would love to hear how and what you are doing, so that we can share it with your fellow alumni in next year’s newsletter. These are exciting times for Physiology, which I believe is poised on the edge of a new golden era. Since the discovery of the DNA helix in the 1950s, great advances have been made in molecular and cellular biology and in deciphering the genome. Essentially all the human genes have now been

Has the time for systems physiology passed?

During the recent decades, substantial changes are made in the borders and contents of physiology as a basic course for the students in medicine. Here some strategies are presented to preserve the classical and integrative approaches in teaching physiology, while these approaches extent our knowledge to molecular, sub-cellular and cellular levels.

Honey bees as a model for understanding mechanisms of life history transitions.

As honey bee workers switch from in-hive tasks to foraging, they undergo transition from constant exposure to the controlled homogenous physical and sensory environment of the hive to prolonged diurnal exposures to a far more heterogeneous environment outside the hive. The switch from hive work to foraging offers an opportunity for the integrative study of the physiological and genetic mechanis...

Structure and composition of the aragonitic crossed lamellar layers in six species of Bivalvia and Gastropoda.

The microstructures, the chemical composition and the soluble organic matrices of the aragonitic crossed lamellar layers of the shells of six species of molluscs have been studied. The microstructures and chemical contents are similar, whereas the quantities of organic matrices are variable. All the soluble matrices are glycoproteins, with low S contents. Their molecular weights, the protein-su...

Integrative impacts of soil tillage on crop yield, N use efficiency and greenhouse gas emission in wheat-corn cropping system

Wheat-corn cropping system is one of the most important grain production systems in theworld. However, the integrative impacts of soil tillage on crop yield, N use efficiency (NUE)and greenhouse gases (GHGS) emissions are not well documented in this system. Thus, a twoyear field experiment was carried out in a typical wheat-corn cropping system with four tillageregimes during the wheat season, ...

Ontogeny of excitation-contraction coupling in the mammalian heart.

The neonate mammalian heart is phenotypically different from the adult heart in many respects. Understanding these phenotypic differences are a fundamental component of understanding the mechanisms of congenital heart disease and its treatment. Differences in excitation-contraction (E-C) coupling of the neonatal heart from that of the adult include less reliance on intercellular sources of Ca(2...

From genes to integrative physiology: ion channel and transporter biology in Caenorhabditis elegans.

The stunning progress in molecular biology that has occurred over the last 50 years drove a powerful reductionist approach to the study of physiology. That same progress now forms the foundation for the next revolution in physiological research. This revolution will be focused on integrative physiology, which seeks to understand multicomponent processes and the underlying pathways of informatio...
